High gas prices initiate trend of less driving

U.S. drivers appear to be succumbing to price shock at the pump. Sales of pickups, minivans and SUVs have fallen below 50 percent of new passenger-vehicle sales this year for the first time since 2001 as consumers turned to smaller vehicles in favor of fuel economy. Drivers, meanwhile, are becoming more prudent in their driving habits.

On CBC Newsworld today the CBC's reporter, Paul Hunter, said "About half the Afghans turned and fled, so there's clearly some work to be done see box at right in link below]." But now he's rather changed the words he uses in print--see bolded bit below. SD Backyard.com is the San Diego Union Tribune’s answer to competition from citizen journalists. I get the meat and potatoes from the internet but the local fishwrap does a nice job on the obituaries. I’m a serial obituary reader (I love people) so the U-T is my Sunday companion on the beach.
